Refurbished vs New: When to Buy Used and Save 50% (2026 Guide)
By Mike2026-05-25
<>
I buy refurbished whenever possible. Over 5 years, I estimate I have saved $3,000+ buying refurbished electronics. Here is what is safe to buy refurbished and what to always buy new.

Always Safe to Buy Refurbished

Apple Refurbished (from Apple.com): Apple refurbs get new batteries, new outer shells, and full 1-year warranty. Identical quality to new at 15% off. Amazon Renewed: 90-day guarantee. Good for Kindles, Echo devices, and Fire tablets.

Sometimes Safe

Headphones: Refurbished Sony XM5 and Bose QC are fine if you replace ear pads ($10). Laptops: Dell and Lenovo outlet refurbs with warranty are safe. Avoid no-name sellers on eBay.

Never Buy Refurbished

Hard drives/SSDs: You do not know the write cycles. Mattresses: Hygiene issue. Vacuum cleaners: Filters and motors wear out. Phone batteries: Buy new battery, not refurb phone.

My Refurb Savings

MacBook: saved $400. iPad: saved $100. Kindle: saved $40. Total: $540 saved buying refurbished from Apple.

</>
